Critical Terrain

Mountain Passes & Dangerous Terrain

Colorado's mountain grades demand preparation. RV owners should downshift well before descents, never ride brakes, and carry chains from September through May.

Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels & Floyd Hill (I-70 West)

Extreme 6%–7% sustained highway grades. Runaway truck ramps are active. Downshift into low gear before descending; do not ride vehicle brakes.

Vail Pass (I-70 MP 180–190) — 10,666 ft

Known for black ice, tight curves, and sudden zero-visibility squalls.

Loveland Pass (US-6) — 11,990 ft

Steep switchbacks above tree line without guardrails in places. Mandatory hazmat bypass when fuel haulers cannot use the Eisenhower Tunnel.

High alpine plateau crossings. High winds cause severe trailer sway; watch for wildlife crossing near dusk.

Mandatory Traction & Chain Laws

Colorado enforces strict traction laws on all state highways, particularly along the I-70 corridor between Morrison (MP 259) and Dotsero (MP 133). Know the codes before you roll.

Passenger Vehicle Traction Law

Active during snow and icy conditions.

AWD/4WD: All tires must have a minimum tread depth of 3/16 inch.
2WD: Must have Winter (3PMSF), M+S, or All-Weather tires with 3/16-inch tread — OR carry tire chains/AutoSocks on drive wheels.

Passenger Vehicle Chain Law

Implemented in severe blizzards before road closure.

Every vehicle — including AWD/4WD — must install metal chains or approved ATDs on drive tires.
No exceptions. Non-compliance can result in fines and liability.

Commercial & Large RV Chain Law

September 1 – May 31, all vehicles exceeding 16,000 lbs GVWR/GCWR.

Must carry sufficient chains on I-70 (west of MP 259), US-285 (west of MP 250), US-40, and US-50.
When commercial chain law is declared: dual-tire axles must chain at least 4 drive wheels.

Pre-Trip Foothill Equipment Checklist

Before clearing Morrison or Golden toward the mountains, verify your equipment matches high-elevation requirements.

Tire tread depth tested with a quarter (minimum 3/16 inch).
Sized tire chains or AutoSocks stowed in an easily accessible storage compartment.
Auxiliary trailer brake controller calibrated for downhill mountain momentum.
Engine coolant rated to at least -20°F to handle sudden sub-zero mountain freezes.
Propane tanks filled — Colorado passes lose ambient heat rapidly, driving up furnace demand.
Battery bank fully charged — freezing temperatures can drop usable lead-acid capacity by up to 50%.
